Climate Change, Infrastructure Resilience and the Case for Independent Scrutiny

Our climate has no border. Ireland’s Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Reviews 2025 and 2026 establish, independently of this campaign, that transport emissions are rising, extreme weather events are worsening, and fossil fuel subsidies must end. Each finding bears directly on the Strangford Ferry: a diesel-powered, weather-vulnerable service subsidised at approximately £2.09 million net per annum (FOI reference DFI-2024-0366), which suppresses demand rather than meeting it. This briefing sets out why those published findings, combined with the documented inadequacy of DfI’s internal cost assessment, make the case for an independent, TAG-compliant feasibility study unanswerable.
